Preview for Next Week

So, due to the weekend arriving, plus getting next Monday and Thursday off, I’ve got some pretty neat events planned for those upcoming days. Hopefully I can have a good time and do some cultural exploring.

Firstly, ICU is hosting its community festival this weekend. It’s supposed to be celebrating the fall season (even though everything is still green) and everyone from the community partakes in it. Anyone can participate, either by selling stuff (like handmade goods) or doing a demonstration with their clubs. It sounds really busy, and awesome, and I will be literally attached to my camera throughout the weekend, so be prepared for lots of pictures!!

Second, a group of us are going to Tokyo Disneyland on Monday (which we have off). It’s $50 to attend, and right in town, so might as well! While I will not be riding any rollercoasters, I’d still like to see how Disney represents itself here in Japan. I don’t know if I have mentioned this, but Disney is literally everywhere here in Japan. You may think that they are “everywhere” in America, but here in Japan, you really can’t escape the influence this company has had. Disney and Disney related products are all the rage here, and no matter where you go you can find something Disney related.

Yet, even though it is the same company that we know of in America, I have noticed a “difference” between representations in America and those here in Japan. Take this picture of this folder for instance.

Japanese Folder:

Look at how “beautified” Ariel is in this photo; I don’t think I’ve ever seen her looking so feminine and girly before. She’s even wearing  blush, not to mention lipstick and jewelry! And there’s no sign of Flounder or Sebastian, her two trademark companions. I would like to look at these differences in Disneyland, and compare them to America. I would also like to compare present day Disney land to the memories I have it of from my childhood.

The last major place that I am planning to see this coming week is the Ghibli Museum. For those of you who don’t know, the Ghibli Museum is dedicated to Hayao Miyazaki, the creator of Spirited Away, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle, and all of his other films. Because his works are so detailed and carefully done, his works have become renown throughout America as well. If you have not seen any of his films, I highly highly recommend you watch them. Personally, Spirited Away is my favorite, but they are all very good in their own ways.

The Ghibli Museum was created by Miyazaki himself, and according to sources it has no particular “path” through the exhibits; people can wander about at will. It is, however, very popular, and they only sell tickets in advance. So we will see if we can actually get in or not. If we make it into the Ghibli Museum, I think we will also visit Inokashira Park, which  is quite close. It has a fair bit of history, so definitely something to learn there.

Should we not be able to make it into the Ghibli Museum, we will probably visit Roppongi, which has an active night club area and of course, shopping. Our teachers swear that if we look hard enough, we can find various shrines and temples  throughout the area. So, should we go there, wish us luck!
