Last Snorkel?

Took my students on a field trip to the Island of Lokrum this morning. It’s a little weird leading a field trip to a place you know very little about and that you have only been to once. I did the best I could, but I think it was a bit of a dud. Fortunately, it was a gorgeous, gorgeous day with some great views and bright sun, so we had a good time.

After I released the students, Stina and I went off to the north side of the island to “the slabs” – a series of rock slabs that you can swim off. Staša told me the best snorkeling in this part of Dalmatia was around this area, particularly some nice corals on the rock walls. My students all thought I was crazy (too cold!) but I went anyway – the hydrological service website reports the water temperature is 20C (68F), which is not that much colder than when we were in the Galapagos, and I was fine there. It was refreshing when I got in, but it was not particularly uncomfortable. I swam for about 30 minutes while Stina sat on the shore and watched, and then when I got out, she went for a run around the island while I sunbathed and dried off. I suspect it will be the last snorkel of the year – too bad, because I really did enjoy it!
