Is it ok to peel off expired visa stickers from a passport to make room for additional passport pages?

TL;DR: It’s not.

I used to do it a lot, a decade ago. Chinese visas come in the form of a one-page sticker, and back then the glue was subpar, to say the least… Now they changed it, and the temptation to remove the sticker is definitely gone, as they won’t go. Ever.

Sometimes, especially if I didn’t remove the visa sticker quickly enough, the page would have a recognizable shape, the part where the sticker was being darker (because of the glue) than the outside rim of the page. This was caught once by an Immigration officer in Macao, and lead to some pointed questions. Another time, it was caught by the Chinese visa office, and they refused to issue me a visa because of that. After that, I stopped doing this. After all, renewing my passport takes a week, so it’s not like I have too long to wait (and I have to passports anyway).
